Mrs. Carol Van Santen is not new to Grace, as she was previously working for the school in the PK and JK classrooms. However, she recently started as the school's Librarian and has kindly shared a little information with us about herself, her background, and her plans for the library this year.
Please tell us a little about yourself.
I grew up in Chicago, I've been married to my engineer husband, Vic (1988 Grace alum!) for 20 years. We have 3 awesome daughters: Abby (18) Anna (16) and Mimi (13-currently and 8th grader at Grace)
I studied Library Science at University of Illinois. My previous experience was working in Public libraries in Chicago and Riverside.
What do you like to do when you aren't working?
Some of my hobbies are papercrafting, quilting, gardening, and of course, reading!
What has been your favorite part of working for Grace so far?
My favorite part of working at Grace has been enjoying the vibrant community of teachers, learners and fellow parents. Our family has made wonderful friendships, thanks to Grace. Oh, and the commute is amazing--We can see the Grace steeple from our front porch and hear the church bells all day!
What are you looking forward to most in your new position at Grace?
As the new Teacher Librarian, I'm looking forward to sharing stories, getting kids excited about reading, collaborating with teachers and getting to know each and every student at Grace!
What will library look like this year?
This year, the library will look really different...we've moved every book out of the "former library" and into our new/temporary home (8th grade/German classrooms.) Library, like the other specials, will take place in the classrooms which means I will bring materials to the kids and provide lessons and storytimes on the go! One exciting piece of this change is that students, parents and staff will be able to place items on hold electronically and I will deliver materials to them.
Grace Lutheran School is often described as a place where children grow in faith and character as well as academics. How does this apply in your position?
Because my Christian faith is so important to me, I'm really grateful to work in a school where the mission is Christ-centered and our faith drives what we do and how we go about our work.
