Every December fifth and sixth graders at Grace Lutheran School work with Grace Church’s Social Ministry Committee to fill Christmas stockings for adults and youth served by The Night Ministry in Chicago. The Night Ministry compassionately provides housing, health care, outreach, spiritual care, and social services to people who struggle with homelessness, poverty, and loneliness.
Students and church members collect toiletries and hygiene items — toothbrushes, shampoo, lip balm, body lotion, deodorant, etc. This year the students also organized a school-wide pizza lunch to raise money to buy additional supplies. They filled approximately 70 stockings on Tuesday afternoon, December 11.
Retired Grace teachers JoEllyn Dorsey and Ellie Schnack make the oversize fleece stockings, along with Margaret Burke from the church's Social Ministry team. Filling them involves an assembly line set up in the 5-6 common room. It’s both fun and satisfying to work together to do good for others.
