Greetings, School Parents,
My name is Pastor Dave Wegner and I am one of the new Associate Pastors at Grace Church. It has been a privilege getting to know your children as they learn and grow here each day. Thank you for committing yourselves to their education here!
As a congregation of Christ-followers, we seek the good of our neighbors, recognizing Christ in all. “We, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another,” says the Apostle Paul in Romans 12:5. To live into our unity we must first name our divisions. One of the more prominent and painful ways in which division is expressed in our American culture is systemic racism.
The season of Lent is a time in the church year in which we reflect on the things that hold us back from living abundantly in God's creation and with God's people. The community at Grace is using this time to gather in small groups to begin a conversation on racism. Participants will read and discuss the book "Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race," by Debbie Irving. You can read more about our plans for these conversations on the Grace website.
We will probably not uncover all the answers. We will probably not revolutionize our culture overnight. But our hope is that these small groups and conversations will generate in us a renewed commitment to unity in the human family.
You are invited to join the conversation. There are several small groups meeting over the next five or six weeks that you may join, including one I will be hosting here at the church on four Thursday evenings, March 16 through April 6, at 7pm. Contact Gwen Gotsch to sign up for a group (; 708-366-6900 ext 122)
I hope you will consider adding your experience and your voice to the conversation.
With my gratitude,
Pastor Dave Wegner
