New Adult Ed classes begin on Sunday

Viviano_Pauline.jpgTwo new series of Adult Education classes begin this Sunday, between worship services, at 9:45 a.m.

Jeremiah: Prophet in Conflict, presented by Pauline Viviano, associate professor of theology at Loyola University, Chicago. During his prophetic ministry the prophet Jeremiah came into conflict with kings, nobles, priests, other prophets, and his own people. The message he was called upon to proclaim was so devastating and his own suffering so great that he came into conflict even with his God. This three-week class explores the life of Jeremiah and his message in the context of the final years of the kingdom of Judah. First session: To Be Prophet to the Nations: The Call of Jeremiah.

Shepherding Our Environment: Water Issues in Illinois. Environmental engineer Tim Dull will discuss hydrofracking, Asian carp, and contaminated groundwater. This is the first of three sessions on environmental issues, led by Grace members and guests.

Spring cleaning with a cause

The Social Ministry Committee will be collecting gently used clothing for children and adults from April 7–14. Needed: clothing for preschoolers at North Austin HeadStart and for elementary-age students at Hephzibah in Oak Park, as well as career clothes for Bridge To Success, an organization that provides clothing and interview coaching for at-risk and low-income men, women and young adults. Please keep these needs in mind as you sort through the clothes in your closets. Then bring your donations to Grace the second week in April.

The Board of Worship is sponsoring a workshop on Saturday, April 13, 10:00 a.m., for those currently serving as lectors and assisting ministers, as well as for Grace members interested in serving in these roles. Both new and seasoned lectors and assisting ministers are invited to hone their speaking skills under the expert guidance of Dr. Eunice Eifert. A Grace member and distinguished professor emerita of theatre at Concordia University Chicago, Dr. Eifert (a lector herself) will offer tips on reading and oral interpretation and other ways to help Scripture come alive. Come to the Seminar Room on the lower level. Take advantage of this special opportunity to learn more about effective public speaking – and have some fun! For more information, contact Dr. Eifert:
