Giving thanks for graduates

At both services on Sunday we will give thanks for the accomplishments of Grace members graduating from high school, college or graduate school. High school graduates will be invited forward in those services.

Bach cantata on Sunday

The cantata for the final Bach Cantata Vespers of this season is Auf Christi Himmelfahrt allein (On Christ’s ascension into heaven alone, BWV 128) presented this Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The pre-service music at 3:45 is Graupner’s Symphony for 2 Horns, Timpani and Strings. Pastor Emeritus F Dean Lueking is the homilist.

Following the service, mezzo soprano Karen Brunssen will perform Lee Hoiby's “Bon Appetit! – A Delicious Opera,” a twenty-minute, one-woman opera based on a 1961 television episode featuring Julia Child. Coffee and treats will be served. There will be a free-will offering at this event to support the Bach Cantata Vespers tour to Germany this summer.

The service is underwritten by an anonymous donor in memory of Paul J. Bunjes, Thomas E. Gieschen, and Herbert M. Gotsch, all of whom were professors of music at Concordia University Chicago.

Help decorate the chancel for Pentecost on May 27 by purchasing geranium plants, which will later be planted in front of the building. Plants may be given in someone's honor or as a memorial. Sign up at the reception desk by Monday, May 21.

"Faith is like playing sports. I must exercise my faith, like my muscles, by practicing and playing the game."  One of this year's eighth-grade confirmands made this analogy in her statement of faith at the Witness Service on May 4. She reminds us that discipleship is faith in action.

Grace is a strong community of faith because its members, sustained by the Spirit, are actively engaged in mission, witness, worship, education, and service. These active expressions of our faith are supported by Grace's budget. In the weeks ahead, prayerfully consider the many ways in which God has blessed you and sustained your faith here at Grace Lutheran Church and School. Then consider making an extra gift to Grace so that we can meet our budgeted expenses for the fiscal year that ends on June 30.
