A Love Stronger Than Evil

During the scary parts, I’ll often tell my kids, “Don’t worry, it’s only a story.” There’s no need to fear Darth Vader or Lex Luthor. It’s only a story, after all. But what about when evil isn’t just a story? What about when the demonic is all too real? Today we consider two events, both all too real. The first is the horrible massacre in a nightclub in Orlando. We awoke last week to news that shocked and saddened all of us, news of 49 of our sisters and brothers killed in an act of evil, the deadliest incident of violence against LGBTQ people in U.S. history. The second is that of a man possessed by many demons, no longer in his right mind, chained in the wilderness. In both stories, there is only one place for us to turn, and that is to Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace. May Jesus come to comfort us, to set us free, and to give us courage to witness to love, even in the face of evil. And may Jesus’ love guide us to open our arms ever more widely to all who are on the margins.
