Grace members extend God's care and compassion into the community in many ways. Some projects involve regular commitments of time; others are one-time projects. Scroll down for news from Grace's Social Ministry Committee and for information about other projects.

Serve at Grace and in the Community

Refugee project needs your support
Grace Church has made a commitment to assist two refugee families who resettled in the Chicago area earlier this year, assisted by the organization RefugeeOne. You can support these families with financial contributions, gift cards to Target, and baby items. If you would like to get more involved or have any questions, please call Sue Foran at 708-488-0296 or stop by the table. Thank you so much!

Donate school supplies
Grace's Social Ministry Committee will hold a school supply drive in August for needy children. The committee will collect supplies for Lutheran Unity East School, Holy Family School and Grace Christian Academy, all located in Chicago. Some suggested items include notebooks, crayons, folders, pens, pencils, magic markers and back packs. Items can be dropped off at church from Aug. 12 through Sept. 2. All donations will be appreciated. Thank you.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository held its annual Hunger Walk on June 23 along the lakefront. Fifteen people from Grace joined with 68 members of James Brooks' church, Harmony Church, and Chicago's North Lawndale community to raise awareness of hunger. The walkers from Grace gathered pledges for $359 and Grace members contributed $380 on Sunday mornings or online. Harmony also received credit from the Food Depository for each walker from Harmony and Grace. The total credit received from the churches' participation in the Hunger Walk will fund Harmony's Food Pantry for 11-1/2 weeks allowing almost 4,600 people to shop at the pantry. Thanks to all who walked and contributed.

Opportunities to serve
On the third Monday of every month, a group of Grace members gather at Fraternité Notre Dame to make sandwiches for distribution to the needy in the Austin area. If you would like to help, please email Kristin Schnabel at
