Erin’s Law is a law in Illinois which requires schools to implement age-appropriate sexual abuse and assault awareness and prevention education for students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade.  At Grace we have decided to address this mandate in PK-6th through story books that will be read to each class by our social worker, Lisa Guagenti, followed by a discussion led by her and the classroom teacher.  Age-appropriate discussions will focus on

-          Distinguishing safe from unsafe touch

-          What are private parts

-          Secrets to tell and secrets to keep

-          Empowerment to say “No” to uncomfortable touch

-          It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches him or her

-          Telling a trusted adult

We are seeking a guest speaker to address the issue with 7th-8th graders.

If you would like to review the book that will be shared with your student, it is available at the school office.  A bibliography of books we will use and the power point presentation shared with parents last spring can be found on our school website or by clicking here.  If you have additional questions about this law or our implementation of the curriculum, please feel free to contact either Lisa Guagenti or Bill Koehne.

Here is our schedule for the discussions so that you can have preparation or follow-up discussions with your student at home.

Nov 12:  JK and 2nd
Nov 17:  PK, 1st, and 3rd
Nov 19:  SK and 4th
Nov 24:  5th and 6th

If for any reason you prefer that your child not participate in these classroom discussions, please contact Mr. Koehne through email.
