April 22, 2016

Grandparent / Grand friend day is only 1 week away!  Check out the information below including an invitation with link to register for the event.  We ask that guests register by Monday so that we can properly prepare for the day.

Thanks to everyone who came out to witness Grace Talent in action last Friday.  What a great evening!  A special thanks to all the parents who served on the planning committee.

Mr. Zielke has decided to become a stay at home dad and will not be returning to Grace next year.  We are sad to see him leave, but wish him all the best.  There will be time towards the end of the school year to say thanks and good bye.  In the meantime, if you know of any good candidates to replace him, please point them to our website to find a position description and instructions on how to apply.

Bill Koehne, Principal

Character Education Goal of the Week:  Helpfulness

Grandparent / Grand friend Day – Our annual Grandparent / Grand friend Day will be held on Friday, April 29.  The format will be slightly different this year with our special guests starting in classrooms at 8:30am.  The morning will conclude with an all school concert ending around 11:30am.  The school day will end at that time as well, so grandparents or grand friends may leave with their students if they wish.  SAVE THE DATE:  April 29th 8:30-11:30am.  An invitation with registration information is available here or on the school website.  Extended Day Care will be available 11:30-6:00 for those who need it.

Open House for Early Childhood:  We are having a special Open House for families with students entering PK, JK, or SK in August.  It will be on Wednesday, May 4, 10:30-12:00.  Attendees will have the opportunity to observe classrooms in action, meet with the principal, and talk with teachers.  If you know someone that may be interested in attending Grace next year in PK, JK, or SK, please pass this information on to them.

A request from Mrs. Hammer- Mrs. Hammer is in need of help setting up for the Art Show next week.  If you can volunteer any time on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, please contact her.

Congratulations to sixth grader Erika Schroeder, who won a full scholarship for a one-week stay this summer at Concordia Language Villages “Waldsee” German immersion village. This is the second scholarship in two years that the Swiss Benevolent Society of Chicago has awarded to a Grace student.

Grace School will once again be hosting SCAMP, our recreational summer day camp for children ages 3-5.  Camp will be held Monday through Thursday, June 6-30, from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  The registration form can be found here.  Contact the school office for more information.

VBS this Summer! – June 20-23 - Send your kids on an over-the-top underground adventure! Grace Lutheran Church and School, along with Village Church of Oak Park, will host Cave Quest VBS, where kids explore the rock-solid foundation of Jesus’ love. Cave Quest VBS is filled with incredible Bible-learning experiences kids see, hear, touch, and even taste! Science fun, team-building games, cool Bible songs, and tasty treats are just a few of the standout activities that help faith flow into real life. (Since everything is hands-on, kids might get a little messy. Be sure to send them in play clothes and safe shoes.) Plus, we’ll help kids discover how to see evidence of God in everyday life—something we call God Sightings. Get ready to hear that phrase a lot! Your kids will also participate in a hands-on mission project, through a program called Operation Kid-to-Kid™ that will let the kids in our community show God’s mighty love to needy kids in the United States. Parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join us at Cave Quest Closing on Thursday at 7:45pm, to celebrate Jesus—the light of the world!

The fun starts at 5:30pm with supper and will end at 8:00pm.
Registration will open in April! Make sure you register your children for this life-changing adventure! Please email Julie Modrich with any questions.

Junior High parents- Costume information is posted on Ms. Gotsch’s blog (msgotsch.blogspot.com) along with a list of props and odds and ends that we are looking for. Please take a look.

Harmony Community Church, feeding 350 families each week in Chicago, needs your help to “raise the roof”With a per capita income of just $12,548, a 19 percent unemployment rate and with 39 percent of households living below the poverty level, the North Lawndale community on Chicago’s West side, bordering  Oak Park, struggles on a daily basis to meet its basic needs.

In the midst of this adversity, Harmony Community Church, led by Pastor James Brooks, (Grace's former Youth Minister) stands as a beacon of hope and safety. For the past 10 years, Harmony has run a food pantry each week, feeding more than 350 families from North Lawndale and surrounding communities. In an area of Chicago where 40 percent of households are food insecure, Harmony is making a difference, each week, every week.

Today, this ministry is in jeopardy and Harmony Church needs your help. Following rainstorms or melting snow, a crumbling roof is letting water into the sanctuary, office spaces and fellowship hall, which is where the Food Pantry is housed.

This congregation that loves and serves like Christ, has set up a crowd-funding website sponsored by Wheat Ridge Ministries, “Raise the Roof,” and has raised about $45,000 but is still more than $5,000 short of the total needed to make the repairs.
